Introduction
Welcome to UKGenScribe. The idea for this site is to collect all that "extra" information that doesn't fit on other sites. It is hoped that this new site will grow into another large archive of records that will assist genealogists and local historians alike. We have tried to make it as user friendly as possible, but always welcome suggestions for improvement.
The new site has been expanded to store documents for all of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. All information from the Norfolk Transcription Archive has been transferred to the new website, minus the parish registers. The Norfolk Transcription Archive will NOT be closed but will remain running indefinitely.
Please keep in mind that this is a finding aid only. Users should check the original document/source once they find the reference in the database.
Each document will have a brief description as to what it is, and if archaic words are used that may be unfamiliar, a short explanation will be added.
To help locate each place that is mentioned, a district or area has been added. We settled on the word district to cover several names used to describe administrative areas. For example, from late Saxon times (10th century) until the end of the 19th century, the basic unit of administration in English counties was the Hundred. But from the end of the 18th century onwards, the areas covered by the Poor Law Unions were also important distinctive districts which did not always follow the lines of the Hundred. So, you will find that we refer to 'Place and District', and where necessary draw a distinction as to the type of district, e.g. Hundred, Union, Archdeaconry, etc.
Finally, the spelling in older records is not at all consistent so do please try to think of all possible permutations when searching for a name.
The records within this archive have been copied as carefully as possible, but we are only human and mistakes can occur, for which we apologize.
The copyright of all transcriptions is held by the transcribers and any other use or reproduction must be with the permission of the transcriber. We will never sell any of this information to third parties.
